N. PAUL WHITTIER AVIATION LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES
A department of the San Diego Aerospace Museum, the N. Paul Whittier Aviation Library and Archives assembles, preserves, and makes available published and documentary materials which chronicle the development of aerospace technology and experience. The archives encourages use of these materials by the Aerospace Museum staff, volunteers, members, academic researchers, students, and enthusiasts.
The Library and Archives serves as repository for the following types of historical and contemporary records:
- Books: The total library contains close to 20,000 books in the collection. These are arranged according to Library of Congress catalog numbers.
- Periodicals: Aviation magazines and serial publications dating back to the Wright brothers. Over 250 titles dealing with military as well as civil aviation.
- Still Photographs: Images of aircraft, aerospace personalities and events, and places of historical importance to aviation. Over a million prints, negatives and slides are included.
- Technical Manuals: Publications prepared for pilots and personnel on the technical aspects of an aircraft.
- Drawings: Line drawings of aircraft, engines, or related material.
- Documents: Unpublished manuscripts, reports, letters and memoranda relating to aviation history.
- Art: Artistic representations of aerospace subjects.
- Personal and organizational papers: Documents created and accumulated by individuals or groups.
- Special Collections: Collections of documents devoted to particular subjects or persons.
