SPECIAL ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS

HISTORICAL LECTURE SERIES
The Museum's Historical Lecture Series was begun in 1985 as a joint venture with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics technical society. Four or five speakers, one each week, relate their experiences and share their expertise on aerospace-related subjects. Recent series topics have included "Women in Aviation" and "Early Test Pilots." A single registration fee covers admission to all four or five lectures, which are held in the evenings in the Museum theatre.
COST: $15.00 for the series
Call the museum's Education Department at (619) 234-8291, ext. 19, or watch this page for information on the next Historical Lecture Series.
BOY AND GIRL SCOUT BADGE PROGRAMS (6 hours, age as appropriate)
Eligible Boy Scouts can earn the Aviation Merit Badge and Girl Scouts can earn their Aerospace Badge in these one-day programs (an Aviation Merit Badge Counselor certifies the Boy Scouts' completion of badge requirements). Programs are scheduled on Saturdays from October through May; call for specific dates. Minimum class size is 15 Scouts; maximum is 30. Participation by parents is highly encouraged.
COST: $12.00 per scout ($10.00 for museum members).
NOTE: The Scout programs must be scheduled by the Scout organization (no individual registrations, please).
ART CONTEST
Each year, an International Aviation Art Contest for students age six through seventeen is sponsored by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, an international aviation organization, as well as federal and state aviation agencies in the U.S. Winning entries at the state level are sent to the national contest in Washington, D.C., and winners from there go on to participate in the world-wide contest at the Federation Aeronautique Internationale headquarters in France.
The museum is participating in this event by sponsoring a local contest for students in the San Diego area. Entries will be judged in one of three age categories: Six to nine years old, 10 to 13 years old or 14 to 17 years old.
San Diego Aerospace Museum contest winners will receive prizes including museum passes, memberships and gift certificates to the Museum Store. ALL entries in the museum's contest will be sent on to the California state contest. Here's your chance to have your work of art displayed at the museum for a week before it goes to the state contest in Sacramento!
There are specific requirements for contest entries including the theme, the medium, and the size of the art work. If you are interested, please call our art contest coordinator, Ms. Pat Fry, at 234-8291, Ext. 32.
Entries must be received at the San Diego Aerospace Museum no later than 4:00 p.m. Monday, February 10, 1997. Entries will be on display from Wednesday, February 12 through Tuesday, February 18. Judging will be done during the weekend of February 15 and 16.
