The San Diego Aerospace Museum

Model Collection

The museum possesses a unique collection of well over 1,500 aircraft models whose quality is unsurpassed. Many are displayed in the museum's Forum; others are placed throughout the museum where they complement the full-sized aircraft on display.

The museum models are either "scratch built," i.e., individually fabricated piece by piece by dedicated model builders, or are "off-the-shelf" models that have been carefully assembled and custom painted. Whether "scratch built" or "off-the-shelf," each model in the museum's collection reflects the extraordinary amount of time and talent necessary to create a museum quality model that has been crafted to exact scale.

A group of skilled volunteers give their time and talents to create models for the museum. They are joined by members of the International Plastic Modelers Society who also create museum quality models for the public's education and enjoyment.

Annually, the Museum sponsors a Scale Model Aircraft Exhibition that is open to the young modelers from the area. Models awarded blue ribbons in the various categories are on display at the museum until the next exhibition the following year.
